Description

Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul.

When someone during his lifetime makes some kind of outstanding achievement -it could be winning awards or winning wars (like in this case) - usually they receive homage in the form of a statue in a park. To me it's a pretty sad way to remember someone by saying "This man wrote good books! Haven’t you heard?" or "This one killed a whole lot of enemies in a war, he's so cool, check him out!" and looking at his rusted face. They try to create an eternal memory but it’s affected as well as the “original” by time and weather. Paintings would be a so much better idea, wouldn't it? They can be so much more expressive.

Statues don’t always look as good as Mr. Yi Sun-sin here. Maybe is just that most of statues I've seen, don't really represent that well the “persona” they intend to. If you don’t believe me, just check out the statue of John Lennon they have in Telde, Gran Canaria. That thing is just weird. It’s already sad enough that people die, let’s make memories that don’t age that bad, it just reminds you how long that statue had been there. Until then they’ll rest in the parks… covered in pigeon shit.

Lololol, you're sooo right about statues, although I actually like this admiral and our dear Sejong Joseon's statues :P
But of course, I'm all for paintings. And I don't want to be reminded of that horrible John Lennon statue...it's...cringe-worthy to say the least xDDD
Anyway, great photo, he really looks like he's watching over the city, right? Like you said about one of mine, I have a photo like this too, now I'm wondering if I should upload it or not! ;)
Picnik again?
